How Zero/Sixty Showdown works

Zero/Sixty Showdown is an interactive vehicle-performance comparison tool. Choose anywhere from one to four vehicles (cars or bikes) from a grid of 574 everyday best-sellers and halo models spanning the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, Japan and South Korea.

Before racing, pick a metric — 0–60 mph, 0–62 mph, 0–100 km/h or an estimated quarter-mile — and apply weather, surface and tyre conditions to see how grip changes the outcome. Every performance time stays hidden until you press Race, so the result is the point of the showdown rather than something you read off a list.

Once a race is run, the finishing order and the gap to the winner are shown in seconds. Modelled or converted data is labelled “Estimated”, and non-default weather or tyre conditions are labelled “Simulated conditions”. The full explanation lives on the Methodology & Sources page.

Understanding acceleration figures

A 0–60 time is not a single, fixed property of a vehicle. Manufacturer figures and independent instrumented tests can both vary because of rollout, timing equipment, test surface, ambient temperature, the tyres fitted, the exact vehicle specification, the battery or fuel state, the launch technique and the driver or rider.

Two magazine tests of the same model can therefore produce noticeably different numbers without either being wrong. Zero/Sixty Showdown takes a single reference figure per vehicle and applies a transparent, consistent conditions model so that comparisons are fair and repeatable — but it is an entertainment tool, not a guarantee of what any individual car or bike will do on any individual day.

Frequently asked questions

Why can two tests of the same vehicle produce different times?

Rollout, timing equipment, surface, temperature, tyres, vehicle specification, battery state, launch technique and driver or rider all affect a measured run. A published figure is a useful reference point, not an exact prediction for every example of that vehicle.

What is the difference between 0–60 mph and 0–62 mph?

0–62 mph and 0–100 km/h are the same test expressed in different units, since 100 km/h is approximately 62 mph. The tool converts these from the 0–60 mph baseline, so they are labelled as estimates. See Methodology for the detail.

How do weather and tyres affect the simulation?

Choosing wet, snow, ice or night conditions, or switching tyre types, scales each vehicle's baseline time using a deterministic grip model that also accounts for drivetrain launch advantage and weight. The same vehicles in the same conditions always finish in the same order — these are simulations, not measured runs.

Are quarter-mile and converted figures always directly measured?

No. 0–62 mph and 0–100 km/h are converted from the 0–60 mph baseline, and quarter-mile times are derived estimates. Any result that relies on modelled or converted data is labelled “Estimated” after the race.

Why are the results hidden until Race?

Hiding the times until you press Race turns browsing into a proper showdown. You pick your vehicles, set your conditions, and only then see who crosses first — with the exact gap in seconds.

How can I report a figure that may need reviewing?
